There is no cookie-cutter approach to good planning and this work comes in all different shapes and sizes. Our planning engagements range from developing capacity building and strategic plans aimed at growing an organization and expanding its impact, to launching or rebooting a program, to enhancing the effectiveness of Board members and leaders.
We work with organizations to customize tools and approaches to planning that reflects their knowledge, resources and spirit and in the process builds a discipline for acting strategically that pays dividends long after the engagement with us is over.
Core to our approach is a thorough assessment of internal assets and organizational structure and external benchmarking against peers and field front-runners. The breakthroughs in a planning process occur more often through an honest reckoning about what’s working and what’s not and a methodical look at what others have figured out already, than a middle-of-the-night Eureka! moment.
Strategic Plan Examples
"Marc led a strategic capacity building process that balanced artistic priorities and financial realities. He also infused a bit of hope into it all, which is something I needed. The process hit the spot and inspired and directed me to the pathways necessary to get where I want to go in the next 10-15 years." - Jo Kreiter, Artistic Director, Flyaway Productions
"Marc has been an invaluable thought partner in the evolution of our Impact Grant program, designing strategy and working closely with our grantees. We consistently receive unsolicited feedback from our grantees describing his support as essential, insightful, transformative, and critical to their success. It is a great pleasure to work with someone whose values and intellect align to effect meaningful and positive change for his clients." - Shelley Trott, Director of Arts Strategy & Ventures, Kenneth Rainin Foundation
"Marc is very good at keeping a large group (in our case, board and senior staff) focused on the big strategic picture without trying to control the conversation or to push the group in a direction that he has predetermined. This was the most productive board retreat of my tenure at AAM and I credit Marc’s approach – his ability to be flexible and to roll with changes along the way – with that success." - Ford W. Bell, President, American Alliance of Museums
"Marc is a master facilitator. He was the right choice to lead our strategy project and brilliant as project manager keeping everyone on track to meet our milestones for completion. He has a genial manner that keeps your project moving without feeling rushed or stressed." - Anita Engles, Executive Director, American Bookbinders Museum
